Roger Redhead never knew why people called him Roger. “It’s Richard,” he’d say, pointing to the nameplate on his desk. His visitor would nod and continue, but as often as not, finish the conversation with a “Thanks, Roger.” Roger would shake his head and point again as the visitor departed.

The fact was that Roger was more polite than some of the names he was called behind his back…
